Signature Injuries - Annotation

Jones, K., T. Young, and M. Leppma. "Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Returning Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans: Implications for Assessment and Diagnosis. " Journal of Counseling and Development : JCD  88.3 (2010): 372-376. ABI/INFORM Global, ProQuest. Web.  20 Nov. 2011.

Jones, Young and Leppma discuss post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) in soldiers returning back from Afghanistan and Iraq. While the disorders can dramatically affect how soldiers function, these disorders can be easily misdiagnosed and even over looked by many health care providers. As the war continues, the number of soldiers with MTBI increases. These soldiers not only need mental and medical care but their families will require support as well. Furthermore, soldiers with MTBI have a much higher risk for re-experiencing an extremely traumatic event through nightmares and intrusive thoughts of the incident (PTSD).

This article is very interesting to me as I am currently serving and my major will lead me in the direction of helping these soldiers. The article was clear, very informative and thoughtful as well. Care of not only the soldier but the soldier's family has been taken into consideration. As the current war continues, so will the number soldiers that are affected by these issues further asking the question: In the light of this new information, how many more "casualties" will result from the war on terror?

Post write: I feel like I need to do a little more research on the authors of the article as well as a much needed revision.  I'm pretty sure some rewording is needed and maybe some more clarity or focus overall as far as what needs to be done. Do you know a soldier who has been affected by MTBI, PTSD or both?

  1. 1.In your own words, fully and with precision, describe what the assignment is asking the writer (your partner) to do? Please use your own words rather than merely quote from the assignment.
The assignment is asking my partner to choose an interesting topic taken from an annotated scholarly journal and to write two paragraphs summarizing the article and giving the readers thoughts on the article if it was helpful in their research to their topic. In this case, Nelson has chosen to talk about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) that soldiers have in retreating back from Afghanistan and Iraq.

2.To what extent has your partner met the expectations of the assignment? Please pick a passage as illustration and describe what works well there. Again, try to use your own words.
My partner has met the expectations of the assignment fairly well. He discusses how these disorders can affect how the soldiers would function during the war, but they can surpass by many health care providers and can be misdiagnosed. He explains that the soldiers would not only need both medical/mental care but also the families of these soldiers will need a great deal of support as well. He states in his second paragraph that this reading was interesting to him considering he is currently serving and that his major will point him in the direction of caring and to help these soldiers in need.

3.What area needs more work? Why? Please pick a passage as illustration and describe what isn’t working.
An area that needs more work is the first paragraph, where he could go more in depth of PTSD and MTBI of how severe it is and how it could affect the rest of their life.

4.Please indicate TWO questions about the draft and at least ONE suggestion for ways to improve it.
Two questions I have about the draft is how can PTSD be treated?, (if any) and how has this article affect my partner emotionally? One suggestion to improve this essay is to go more in depth on PTSD and to give more insight about it and how it can affect a soldier, or anybody for that matter.
